Digital Lighting Timers and Mechanical Lighting Timers
All timers, whether they are digital or mechanical, control the time that the lights come on and go off. The basic mechanical timer uses a clock that has mechanical trippers that trip the connection on or off at a specified time. These are very simple and trouble free, and can usually be made to turn the lights on and off at 2-3 different times. For example, you could set it to turn the lights on from 5pm to 10 pm, and then again from 4am to 7am. This is about the extent of the mechanical timers capabilities. For much more versatility, use one of the various digital lighting timers. These electronic timers range from a simple 24 hour clock with multiple on/off capabilities, to a fully programmable Digital lighting timer that can be programmed for different on/off times on different days of the week, multiple on/off times per day, and can be set to control more than one lighting system or other device. Some of the more advanced digital lighting timers can even correct for daylight savings time and when set for dusk to dawn operation they know the different dusk and dawn times.

The digital lighting timers and the mechanical timers will plug right in to our Multi-tap and CTS transformers, which are built to accept them. There is no need to run extra junction boxes or 120 volt outlets when using the lighting timers.

Lighting Photocells
Photocells are used to sense when it is light or dark out. They are an easy and maintenance free way of controlling a landscape lighting system. Lighting photocells can be used by themselves or in conjunction with a mechanical or digital lighting timer. The lighting photocells that we cell are made to control the 120 volt power service to the transformer. It is just like having an automatic switch that turns on the transformer when it gets dark, and turns if off when it gets light again.

There are lighting photocells made specifically for our Multi-tap and CTS transformers that simply plug into sockets on the transformer designed to accept them. You can use both a timer and a photocell for more specific control of your lighting system. For example, you can set the timer for 5pm to 10 pm and also use a lighting photocell. This will prevent the lights from actually coming on at 5pm if it does not get dark until 6pm. This makes for a maintenance free set-up and insures that you do not have lights running in the daytime. For specific instructions on setting up lighting timers and lighting photocells please consult our Transformer Installation Instruction Sheet.
